To our valued Acura customers:

Honda Canada Inc. has notified a limited number of affected customers of the possible unauthorized access to their information. This information included name, address, Vehicle Identification Number, and in some cases, Honda Financial Services Account number, telephone number and e-mail address. The affected customers were notified by mail in May 2011, June 2011, and August 2011. Acura assures its customers that there was no other customer data available to be accessed.

We do not recommend that the affected customers take any specific action at this time, other than being on the alert for marketing campaigns by telephone, mail or e-mail requesting personal information. Acura does not share its customer information with unauthorized third parties and does not contact customers asking for financial information. If you receive any such inquiries, please call our special toll-free line at 1-800-387-5399.

What information has been breached?

How do I know if I’m one of the affected customers?

The vast majority of Acura customers were not exposed to this possible unauthorized access. Acura has notified all affected customers by mail.

Can this information be used for identity theft or fraud?

The information that may have been accessed did not include the type of data typically used for identity theft or fraud.

What should I do if I receive a letter from Acura?

We do not recommend any action at this time, other than being alert for marketing campaigns from third parties that reference your ownership of an Acura vehicle. You should also be on the alert for possible phishing activity. Acura does not share its customer information with unauthorized third parties and Acura does not contact customers asking for financial information. Customers should be suspicious of any requests for further personal or financial information.

What is phishing?

Phishing refers to the act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The e-mail directs the user to visit a Web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, Social Insurance Number, and bank account numbers. Acura does not share its customer information with unauthorized third parties and does not contact customers asking for financial information. Any such request should be reported immediately at 1-800-387-5399.

I have not received a letter from Acura. How can I check to ensure that my personal information was not potentially accessed?

What are you doing to ensure it never happens again?

The protection and safe keeping of customer information is a responsibility that we take very seriously. We are working diligently to protect our customer information and to improve our data security procedures. In addition, we have notified the Canadian federal and all applicable provincial privacy commissioners’ offices so they are fully aware of the situation.
